For that entire time I have watched the phrase "healthcare" being grammatically abused by all - even by the largest book publishing companies, dictionary publishers, newspaper and magazine publishers, medical institutions, and government agencies in America.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Who Is To Blame For The Confusion?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But these very same publishers and institutions are to blame for the prolonged confusion. Some of them mandate the using of "healthcare" as one word for all grammatical situations. And some of them still insist on using "healthcare", as well as "health care", depending on the specific topic being discussed. To make matters much worse, some publications will even switch around the term and the way that it is used - all within the same publication. Here at our company we have consciously chosen to use "healthcare" as one word, but we certainly understand both sides of the argument. New compound words always seem awkward to use for a while. But eventually, we all accept and conform to the change. Most of us in America have already accepted the change to using "healthcare" as one word. Now it is time for the last few holdouts to accept this change and start using "healthcare" as one word.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Why We Use Healthcare&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Why, then, does my medical training and publishing company embrace "healthcare" as one word? Well, "health care" may have technically been two words when the term first came about, but in all rational practicality it was one word. The distinction was a fine one - and way too subtle, obviously, to keep up. Before long, writers and editors alike started dropping that confusing extra space, transforming what had become a purely semantic nuance into no nuance at all. At my company, we have a core belief that we have an obligation to our students and readers to make everything that we teach and publish to be as easy to read and understand as possible. If this means using one word versus two, or using an unpopular or grammatically incorrect hyphen in a word, or splitting an infinitive, or using extra commas, then we will do it. Our first and foremost duty is to our students and readers, not the grammar editors or linguists.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Evolution And Improvement Of Our Language&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But can we blame our language for simplifying and evolving? It's equally possible that American society, in its infinite semantic wisdom, decided not to split hairs - or word phrases - where it is pointless to do so. This isn't just the inescapable evolution of our language. It actually is a sensible change to make.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Healthcare" and "Health Care" Defined&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We will frequently see the word or phrase "healthcare" and "health care" but are unsure whether they are the same. Many people use each one to mean the same thing - but they were fundamentally different at first. At its most elemental definition, "health care" was a service offered by trained professionals to patients. As one word, "healthcare" meant the system in which the professionals work and where patients receive care. Healthcare as one word referred to a system to deliver health care (two words). Thus, America has a "healthcare system". In Great Britain, it's called the National Health Service.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We can easily see why these definitions can get confusing and become co mingled. But now, most of us accept that the term "healthcare" is now a generic way of referring to any aspect of medical care - no matter what the topic being discussed. Whether it is a discussion of the diagnosis or treatment of diseases, or how that diagnosis or treatment is delivered, or how they are paid for, is now "healthcare" - one word.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Conclusion&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Healthcare will eventually become widely accepted as one word, whether linguists and editors like it or not. This acceptance has already occurred in British English, where "healthcare" is used more frequently. A lot of people sit in a chair for 8 hours a day, and often a chair that does not allow you to keep good posture all day either. The result of this is that your hip flexors will become tighter and be at risk for a strain unless you perform stretches. Now ideally you should be performing these stretches every day for at least 5 minutes, if you can do up to 10 or 15 minutes even better.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stretches Lying Down&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is a great stretch to start off with because it's so gentle and natural for your leg. To perform it all you need to do is start off lying down on your back, try to take some slow, relaxed breaths until your body become relaxed. Once you feel ready lift up one of your legs, allow your knee to bend, then place both your hands just behind the knee and gently pull upwards towards your chest until you feel a good stretch. You can hold this stretch as long as you'd like, typically recommended is around 20 seconds and then try to go further after a short break. A key thing to note about this stretch is that if you feel any hip flexor pain, stop immediately.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stretches Sitting&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many people initially classify this as a groin stretch, but remember some of the Hip Flexor muscles are also considered groin muscles, which is partially why this is a great stretch. Hold for 20 seconds then shake out your legs again and repeat once or twice more. **Note: Try to keep your lower back straight, you should not be rounding your back and hunching over during the stretch.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stretches - Standing&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Standing stretches are amazing at targeting the inner core muscles around the pelvic region. Here are two of the best stretches you should incorporate into your stretching.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lunge&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You may have seen this one before because it is one of the best Hip Flexor stretches. The reason for this is that it works, and is worth reiterating.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Perform this stretch by standing upright initially, and then taking a large but comfortable step forward. Next, descend into a lunge position where your front knee is at an approximately 90 degree angle. Now push your lower hips forward until you feel the stretch and hold the position for up to 30 seconds. Just 3 sets of this stretch alone will do wonders for your flexibility.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lunge Twist&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This final stretch is similar to the lunge stretch above, but with an advanced twist on it. It will look very similar to a lunge, but instead you can allow your back leg knee to rest on the ground. Try to keep your upper torso upright and then lift the arm of the lowered leg over your head. You will know immediately if you are doing this correctly, as this stretch targets several of your muscles, even the hard to reach Tensor Fascia Latae.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Static Stretches&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is a special type of stretches performed using a resistance band or tube that can be used both as a stretch and strengthening exercise at the same time. To perform you need to attach one end of the band to a wall or anchor point and the other end to your ankle. Next, lift up your knee as high as you can and hold the position for 10-15 seconds. You should not only feel a stretch, but also fatigue in your Hip Flexors.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hip Flexor Stretches Summary&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To recap, you do not need to perform every single one of these exercises every day. It's easy to do and very relaxing. I have worked with many people over 25 years and many don't know what relaxation is! Lots of people close their eyes, and it's as if their minds are still chattering away, but they just have their eyes shut!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;15 minutes per day could be all that you need to be calmer and in less pain. You will just need to be persistent and consistent. A lot of health problems can be alleviated by meditating as well. Headaches can be the result of not enough water, but also too much overwhelm. Aches and pains in general can result from not taking time out and all our muscles respond by tightening up! It really IS that simple!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To meditate:- Try sitting quietly, closing your eyes and focusing on just one word that you can repeat over and over to yourself, like 'Love'. If this seems too 'out there' for you, and you can't imagine yourself somewhere peaceful because your life really is too hectic; then try simply sitting calmly and peacefully and still for a few minutes each day. Or try focusing on one single object and block everything else out. You start to notice things in your periphery when you do this and it is very calming. Keep staring and just let all your cares fade into the background...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You may have trouble quietening your mind. The Stillness and the Silence are what you are trying to achieve. Meditation is about connecting with the 'space between thoughts'. So, if thoughts enter your mind as you sit calmly, then just acknowledge them, and try to release them. If you still have difficulty, then like the lovers in the park; just find a beautiful tree, put your back against the strong trunk, lean back and close your eyes; letting the warmth of the sun and the light breeze gently wash away your stresses and cares. Then, breathe deeply into your lungs and relax...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The more you practice simply taking time out, the more wellness and wellbeing you will experience. Your blood pressure will drop. Your depression will lift. You will find yourself able to cope much better with whatever life happens to throw at you and you will find yourself smiling more each day!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My granddaughter has a saying, "A day without laughter is a day wasted!" I believe she is right! Do you know that children laugh and smile 100 times more than we do as adults? Perhaps it's time we remembered to 'act like children'when it comes to our inner relaxed and happy selves! After all, life is full of responsibilities, cares and worries, but it is also about the people in our lives, including us! Aren't we important too?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Meditation on a daily basis is one of the absolute easiest ways to breathe easier too!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;MRI scans have shown that brain activity changes significantly during meditation (or 'time outs!') Our brains whilst sitting quietly, produce 'alpha waves'; which are known to relax the nervous system. THIS is what brings about pain reduction. It is also fundamental to aligning your vibrations so the Law of Attraction works on what you want, rather than what you don't want. Here are two simple meditation techniques for you to use in your journey to self improvement.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Meditation came to prominence through the Beatles and this was how I became interested. I use it for energy and peace (which seems a bit contradictory, but it is the essential nature of being in the flow). It is a very simple technique.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of the aims of meditation is to attain a state of 'no thought'. Unfortunately, the moment you realize you have attained it, it is over. In some meditation training using the following technique, you are assigned a person-specific mantra word by your trainers that is to be kept secret. So, for the purpose of this instruction we will use the word 'OM'.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is recommended you do not eat or do vigorous exercise 20 minutes either side of meditation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sit comfortably in a chair without arms or headrest, so your arms can rest into your lap and your head is free to move. Decide on how long you will meditate (it's spooky how accurate your 'coming around' is), breathe normally through your nose and begin repeating the mantra in your thoughts. Strive to allow the mantra to rise from somewhere deep inside your mind as a thought, rather than merely saying the word, and don't time the thought to your breathing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you drift into other thoughts, be gentle with yourself and simply indicate a preference to return to thinking the mantra. If your body feels like sagging, allow it. If your head feels like lolling, allow it. Always take the path of least resistance. If you feel yourself sinking or drifting, it's okay - it is all a part of meditation and deep relaxation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sometimes, as you are sinking into deeper levels of consciousness, you may feel a heaviness in the head. This is normal. Allow yourself to keep sinking or move your head a little.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you feel the time is up, slowly begin to stretch out, starting with your fingers. Give yourself a minute or so to come out of meditation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The next meditation technique is Chinese in origin and based on Chi Gong (or Kung) breathing. This technique has other, more powerful benefits that we don't have the space to discuss here, but suffice to say your physical health will receive a giant boost by regular practice. I also add that this technique embraces Wu-Wei, a Taoist principle roughly meaning 'in the flow'. I was instructed that a more accurate meaning is 'Inner Activity - Outer Passivity'.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This can be done standing or sitting. I will describe standing because it generates a much greater feeling of internal strength and power, which is a contrast to the first technique. If your main aim is to relax and energize, seated is fine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stand up and allow the knees to sag slightly (if you wish to go deeper into Chi Gong, bend the knees more), with the feet straight or turned in marginally. Rock the pelvis slightly so that the natural arch of the back is flattened, and imagine that the crown of your head is being suspended by a string from above. Touch your upper palate lightly with your tongue just behind the main ridge (slide your tongue back from your teeth until you feel the ridge, go down the slope and stop. Lastly, bring your hands around as if you are holding an imaginary 12' -15' ball in front of you. Keep your shoulders relaxed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is the set up position to allow maximum Chi energy to flow. Once you have done it a few times, it will become second nature.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, all you need do is slowly breathe diaphragmatically in through the nose and allow your energy to sink down. You can imagine you are a great tree rooted firmly to the ground (this gives a sense of strength and power), or that your diaphragm are bellows, pumping energy all around your body, or that you are at the side of a waterfall, and as the mist caresses you it washes away all your worries. Choose any visualization that works for you. The keys are; stillness, power and sinking your energy down. If you feel a heat in your hands this is pure Chi energy. Play with it!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These are two different yet simple meditation techniques to assist you on your journey to self improvement. I hope you enjoy using them. The answer will vary, depending on the individual and the amount of time one has been meditating. Some Yoga teachers are very specific about the optimum time for meditation, but some of us have very strict work schedules.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Morning Meditation for Early Risers&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Morning, especially early morning, is traditionally believed to be the best time for meditation, for several different reasons. The first reason is because of atmosphere; the world is still sleepy and quiet in the early morning hours for the most part, depending on where one lives, and this lends itself to a more meditative state automatically. Another reason is because one has, hopefully, just awakened from a good night's sleep and sleep states have a special symbiotic relationship with meditation. One carries the momentum of a restful sleep and meditates - building on the foundation laid during the night, calming the mind and becoming mindful. This state of being present within the moment is then carried throughout the rest of the day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Exceptions to Morning Meditation&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are exceptions to every rule, and it is important not to become attached to a certain time of day. There is no magic time for meditation. The time to meditate is when it is best for you. For example, someone working the third shift should not feel obligated to meditate at six a.m., just because others have good results meditating at that time. For that person, they may do better to meditate in the evening, just before they head off to work.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Night Meditation for Late Risers&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;An alternative time to meditate is before going to bed in the evening. For some people, this could be their primary meditation time; for others, this would be their secondary meditation time. Attaining a calmer state, through meditation before bed, can lead to some of the best sleep one has experienced in their entire life. One of the primary causes of sleepless nights is the mind's inability to cease its thinking long enough for one to drift off to sleep. Bringing stillness to the mind, through meditation, eliminates this problem.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Brief Meditation Sessions&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In addition to a scheduled meditation, it is also helpful to try mini-meditation sessions throughout the day. These meditations need not be long; even a few minutes will do. When an individual has already trained his or her mind to be still through normal meditation sessions, it takes relatively little time to achieve that state throughout the day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just as the muscles in the physical body have a memory, so does one's inner space. For those who only meditate for a few minutes, it must be remembered: An individual cannot realistically hope to reach deep states of meditation and reap all of the rewards of the practice during short sessions. Why does it happen during menopause?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dry skin can be defined as excessive dryness of the skin often looking flaky, red or bumpy. As we age, our ability to produce natural skin oils declines. This can lead to tightness in the skin and itching. Most often our hands, face, arms and legs are most effected, but it can happen anywhere on the body. In some, it affects them only during the winter months, making problems only temporary and mild. Others suffer from dry skin year round, making more severe cases that can require a quick trip to the doctors for an ointment that will stop it from becoming an increasing problem.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Menopause commonly affects women between the ages of 40 through 60. This is known as a decline in the hormone production of estrogen, your ovaries no longer release eggs and periods come to an end. Estrogen is one amazing hormone. It is responsible for the maturing of a girls body during puberty and it keeps a woman's bones strong. Estrogen is also responsible for collagen and natural oils that keep skin smooth. When estrogen begins to disappear, so does your bodies ability to retain moisture. Meaning that this decline of estrogen is what may be responsible for your dry skin.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are ways to combat the loss of estrogen. It is amazing at how many dry skin solutions are on the market today and the advances they are making in repairing skin cells, giving a youthful glow.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some changes that you can make today to start restoring your skin is to eat a smarter and healthier diet. Look for foods that are rich with essential fatty acids. Use sunscreen everyday, even is winter to protect you from harmful ultra violet rays. Take shorter showers and turn down the heat! While a hot, steamy shower may feel good, it stripes your body of natural body oils. Look for a gentle soap avoiding soaps that have strong scents, anti-bacterial in its name or is a deodorant soap. These can be harsh, striping your body of its oil barrier leaving skin drier than before.
